With The Joneses, Who Knows What’s True?
March 4th 2010 01:21
The Joneses aren’t your typical family. They’re so perfect in every way their neighbors want to be like them in every way possible. They buy into their lifestyle and buy everything they show off—from jogging shoes to golf clubs. But the Joneses aren’t what they appear to be. Behind the façade of the family and house is a secret, that, when revealed, threatens to destroy relationships and trust not only between themselves, but also among the others who have learned to look up to them when it comes to living the dream life.
So, who are The Joneses? As far as the trailer of the movie reveals, they are sales people pretending to be an ideal family that has it all. The idea behind the charade is the fact that people will buy anything that appears popular and used by the cream of the crop. When the Joneses move into a new neighborhood, everyone suddenly admires them for their tastes and buy into their lifestyle!.
Yep, there’s a new sales force in town and it's the The Joneses! With the Joneses, selling takes on a whole new level by fooling people into believing in a bogus lifestyle that moves around products. In a way, the premise is based on a bit of truth. Families do perpetuate product popularity and use when they prove among their neighborhood circle what’s good and what’s not. It’s this word-of-mouth marketing that really works every time. The movie only took it a bit further by asking? “What if there’s a company that hire’s sales people to play a family in order to use and talk about products in a way that will encourage people to buy them?
So, The Joneses is not a real family and is simply a team of sales persons out to promote products. Many ethical questions will be talked in the movie in the light of the modern consumerist society. How far should people go just to sell products? What is really important in life?
Well, those are questions, but the movie is really more about entertainment than driving in a social message to capitalists. In the end, we all know that the pseudo world of the Joneses is going to crumble and that lessons will be learned by the characters. After a false success in doing what they're good at, they will be moving on to new things and finding a new, but real, life. This stars David Duchovny, Demi Moore, Amber Heard, and Ben Hollingsworth.
