Whiplash in Iron Man 2 Goes for the Semi-Naked Look

Mickey Rourke doesn't look much different from the way he sometimes dresses as Whiplash in Iron Man 2.
A lot of you already know that Mickey Rourke is the villain Whiplash in Iron Man 2. This character's alter ego is Mark Scarlotti, supposedly Russian and a man perhaps as brilliant as Tony Stark (Iron Man) himself. He works himself up to being popular with a good education and the talent to boot. Seeking big opportunities, he willingly gets involved with the wrong people and starts making advanced weapons for them in a deal that goes bad. Bitter and angry, his situation pushes him to use his ingenuity to fashion his own metal suit. He turns into Whiplash, a criminal with a powerful exoskeleton and an energy whip that does more than just snap in the air.
Whiplash appears in the Iron Man comic books wearing one of two costume versions. One gives him the half-naked-look and it looks something like an unfinished Iron Man suit with a similar round chest plate. The other makes him appear more like a cross between a masked lion-tamer and a Vegas performer in a leather fetish suit. It has him sporting black tights with huge seventies collars, a pink cape, and long green hair coming out of his hood.
In the comic book, Scarlotti decides to renames himself as Backlash, which seems reasonable considering his choice of costume. It's really a reference to his vengeful nature and he's always aiming for Iron Man with the tip of his whip. In the comic book, Whiplash can easily give Iron Man's armor a beating and it's certainly expected in the sequel after fans have watched the hero display his technological superiority in the first movie.
Anyway, the Backlash look is really not something that you'd appreciate in a special-effects movie that pretends to be serious. It's probably why the producers of Iron Man 2 opted to use the semi-naked look, and this suits Rourke pretty well since he's already comfortable with that kind of fashion style. We can only imagine how his character will fight in the movie with much of his skin showing and unprotected from Iron Man's attacks. But that's where the fun is in watching such scenes even if they're only in the movie trailer.
