Things Go Bump in the Night Again in Paranormal Activity 2
July 5th 2010 01:40
Some people just can’t get enough of things that go bump in the night. When the movie Paranormal Activity came out, it made a lot of buzz even when people said the movie wasn’t really scary at all. Some said it didn’t have any of the good stuff that usually populates horror movies. It only had things that moved in the dead of the night. That’s pretty much it, but it’s a fact that people bought it as something that is a reflection of reality or the supernatural part of it. It may not exactly be your typical horror flick with fangs and blood, but it definitely is a good ghost movie.
Now there’s Paranormal 2 from Paramount Pictures, the outfit that bought the rights and seems prepared to turn the movie into a franchise (more money). It’s not going to be any different from the first one, except maybe for a bit more money (a lot more) in the budget and more visual stuff. Why change something that’s already wanted by audiences?
Like the first, Paranormal 2 is about strange things that go on inside a house that seems to be caused by a ghost. There are the cameras again to document anything that happens in the night. In the teaser trailer, we have bodies that fly through the air; a room with a baby in a crib, and a sulking female ghost that appears to be in pajamas (a ghost nanny?). It’s what’s supposed to be the source of the torment of the family in the house. Who would want an invisible companion in the house who apparently can be very physical (or not)? You wouldn’t want your baby alone with a ghost—especially one you don’t know!
Oren Peli, the guy responsible for writing and directing the first Paranormal Activity, won’t be helming the sequel. But he’s happy to have Tod Kip Williams to direct. According to Peli, Williams knows what the fans want. He adds that Williams is the guy he wants at the helm. Based on the trailer alone, you can still get the same mood and feel coming from the first one. There are still lots of low resolution camera images that show stuff going on in the rooms. The original had a budget of only $15,000 but it earned $107,000,000 in the US alone. Now with more resources and a marketing campaign, who knows how much this sequel will earn?
