The Prince of Persia Comes to Life in Jake Gyllenhaal

The movie adaptation of the classic video game, The Prince of Persia, is reminiscent of what was done with Tomb Raider. When the Lara Croft movie was released starring Angelina Jolie, the franchise really took off and spawned more video games that took the gun-toting adventurer to new heights. Now, it's happening again in another adventure movie with Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead role as Prince Dastan, out to protect - or more correctly - to partner with his beloved but defiant princess on a mission to keep an evil dude from doing his dirty work.
For you video game aficionados out there who grew up playing platform video games, you would know the Prince of Persia as the running and leaping prince who sometimes dangled on ledges while battling snakes and other hazards in ruins in the desert. It's a simple but frustrating game which can take a while to master. Later, new versions gave the game new life as they catered to a much younger and discerning generation.
Through the years, the look of the Prince in the video game evolved. In the beginning, he didn't really have a face. But then the developers gave him one - a dashing design of for an ancient swashbuckler with a goatee. In this role for a Disney production, Gyllenhaal transformed himself into a character of times past. It's kind of like the transformation actor Johnny Depp went through in the Pirates of the Caribbean series. But while Depp's pirate in that other Disney movie is somewhat effeminate, Gyllenhaal's prince in Persia is all testosterone, and this makes for an interesting battle of the sexes with his love interest played by Gemma Arterton.
Gyllenhaal being chosen to play Dastan is really an ideal move as the young actor is convincing as the sprightly Persian prince, even as one who speaks with an English accent. Why is it that a lot of period films set in the Middle East have characters that speak this in this manner, anyway? But that's not to say that it's in bad taste. It actually works quite well and Gyllenhaal's accent is perfect for such an adventure film.
The complete title of this new movie-from-video-game production is The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. It's likely going to be an all-time favorite and maintain a good fan base like the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. We may expect sequels and more sequels. If Gyllenhaal signs up for them all, he may just end up being recognized as the Prince of Persia for a long time.
