The Defendor Is Woody Harrelson
September 8th 2009 00:10
We've seen actor Woody Harrelson in a lot of serious movies and some semi serious ones, but this one in which he plays someone who thinks he's a superhero is really something new. It's kind of like The Defendor, our hero, is playing Woody Harrelson, the actor.
Defendor is kind of a comedy even though it's a real drama. It's also serious about the characters and you'd really want to root after Harrelson's character. Sure, he's a bit wacky but that doesn't mean he doesn't have a heart and a soul to match.
In Defendor, Harrelson goes around town dressed in his trademark superhero outfit using toys as weapons. He's after Captain Industry and his shrink, played by Sandra Oh, who we are familiar with as Doctor Christina Yang in Grey's Anatomy. The Defendor describes his quarry as an evil mastermind who smuggles drugs and has the deep delusion that's he's the one to do it, doing crazy stunts in the process that do him more harm than good. No matter what people say or convince him he's not, he just keeps on playing the superhero.
Harrelson's superhero character is serious about doing what's right and good, which we all know is something that all people should be. Mentally sick as he is, he's an example of the good that lies within us all but fail to bring out. The Defendor is the guy who goes out of his way to help people in distress and bring criminals to justice, not minding his own safety. He's the guy who we all wish to have more of on this planet, but we ourselves fail to set an example, preferring to stay by the sidelines and not do anything.
The Defendor is in an imaginary world but the dangers that he faces are real and he gets hurt both physically and emotionally in his dogged quest for justice. Because of this, the audience would feel pity yet admire him at the same time, knowing that he shouldn't be the only one doing the heroic stuff, and that he deserves the support of the people around him. Our hero befriends a girl who is perhaps just as damaged as himself and looked down upon by society. Defendor is about unlikely things and how such can be the factors that ultimately teach us about how we should act in life. There's a Defendor in all of us and we all have our little Captain Industries. What are we going to do about them?
What's Transylmania?
