I'm called Baby Doll.

I'm not Sailor Moon!
There’s a movie that captures everything that suckers for anime and Heavy Metal would want in a 3D semi computer-generated movie. The title of the movie is Sucker Punch and it’s written and directed by Zack Snyder with screenwriter Steve Shibuya.Snyder debuted in directing with the remake of Dawn of the Dead in 2004. But he's now well known for his masterpiece blockbuster 300. You will see much of the hard-hitting action from 300 in Sucker Punch. Only this time, it's babes doing all the damage! With the imaginary sequences in the movie, it will be a thrill to watch, like a grand demo film of computer special effects!

Feel the bite of my cold steel!
Sucker Punch has all the characteristic of a B movie, and may be compared to the warrior-babe 2006 movie DOA Dead or Alive, but it’s not the same, old stuff. This one is really classy in its presentation and it’s got a lot of the elements that you’ve come to expect in an anime series and heavy metal-type movies. But of course, since it is intended for a broader audience, it will not have the hard core elements you would expect from a more mature piece. But who would want those things in this movie anyway? This is a movie that is not meant to be hidden under your bed (although you still can).

School-girl-type battle uniforms? Sucker Punch has them!

Leather and lace on curvaceous battle babes? Sucker Punch has got them, also!

Guns and oriental bladed weapons? You got them in Sucker Punch!

Flying action sequences against chrome robots? They’re all in Sucker Punch!

I'll escape!
Of course, the sex in Sucker Punch is confined to sexy outfits and suggestive moves, and that’s okay. It’s originally meant for a wide audience (PG-13) with the bulk of it being comics and hard core art fans who read Heavy Metal magazine. It’s pretty obvious that the creative heads behind this film are all fans of the Japanese anime and manga and are quite familiar with the action sequences you usually see in cartoons like Sailor Moon and Dragonball. In fact, the costumes of the babe heroes in Sucker Punch are inspired by anime-style school girl uniforms—complete with short, striped skirts and sailor collars. The movie is really a grown up anime fan’s dream movie come true! It even has a bit of Dungeons and Dragons in it. Yes, it's got a big, mean, fire-breathing dragon which heats up life for the costumed girls!

Leather babe in trouble!
For those who care to know, Sucker Punch is about a girl who is put into a mental institution by her stepfather. In the asylum, she creates a team of girls who are as emotionally tormented as she is. The movie shifts between our girl-hero’s imagination and the reality of what’s happening to her as a prisoner of a dirty older man. In her mind, the girls turn into hero babes with weapons and powers that allow them to do battle against forces direct from the world of science-fiction and fantasy. Her goal is to find items that will allow her to escape, before she is abused by her captor. It’s kind of like a role-playing video game made into a movie.

Sucker Punch, chrome, warriors, robots, reflection, sci-fi
In the future, everything is chrome!
A lot of the scenes in Sucker Punch aren’t really new. We’ve seen a lot of them already in anime shows and in movies like Resident Evil 3D (a girl battling with a giant warrior), but viewers may not really care as all of it are visual feasts, especially that the movie is in 3D. In an IMAX theater, the experience would definitely be a blast! It’s one movie that you would want to watch over and over just for the delight of being immersed in the action the girls get into in the story. This movie will likely become a cult classic and still sell well in video format. Young collectors will probably gobble it up from movie stores all around the globe.

Sucker Punch stars Emily Browning, the ghost girl from the movie Ghost Ship (2002). She’s grown up now and has graduated from her ruffled dress in that horror flick. Her costars include sexy actresses Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish, Jamie Chung, Jena Malone, and Carla Gugino, who comic book fans remember as the original Silk Spectre in the comic book-inspired movie, Watchmen (Spectre 2 was played by Malin Akerman). Gugino wore 1940s tights and lace in Watchmen, but here, she has a totally new look but still sexy nevertheless. She's one actress who can easily fit into such roles and play the parts perfectly.

Live action anime-babes go to battle!

Sucker Punch may not appeal to certain people, and some may even see it as just another movie that exploits women, but the target audience of the movie should also be considered. A large number of its audience will be male who have lots of testosterone running in their veins. Children (13 and below) who think this movie is cool may have to go watch it with their parents for guidance. But even if they don’t understand what’s happening, they may still find it quite entertaining. Like one fan commented about the trailer, “I’m not sure what’s happening but I like what I see!”

The Silk Spectre was played by Malin Ackerman...not Carla Gugino.

You're right! Thanks for clarifying. Carla Gugino played the original Silk Spectre while Akerman played the new Silk Spectre in Watchmen.

Sarcasm aside, yeah, there's a lot of fantasy elements in this fantasy movie.
There are also many cliches, because, like Hooper said in Chasing Amy, everything under the sun's been done, and chances are it was done a long time before you got there.
Watchmen was a comic based off of other comics, Star Wars was older space operas and samurai movies, and The Fighter's premise sounds exactly like an Oscar winning movie about a down-and-out boxer who gets a shot at the title fighting Apollo Creed.
And yes, a fantasy movie about pseudo super-heroines has sexually charged costumes. Supergirl, Electra, the Silk Specters, Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl, Jean Grey. Pretty much every non-evil super-character (Mystique is kind of a grey area). It's a requirement.
Snyder takes a lot of heat, and I just don't get it. Dawn of the Dead was AWEOSME. 300 was GARBAGE, but the guy is clearly into graphic novels, so I conclude that he is a fanboy. Watchmen was great (aside from the ending and the huge cock). I haven't seen that one about Owls yet, so I can't judge. Sucker Punch was another obvious fanboy project. The guy has a trend: He's like a less nerdy Kevin Smith, but I don't see him making Jersey Girl any time soon.
What I am getting at is that I don't get all the shit thrown at the cat. It should be directed at the people making Ice Cube, a Nigga Wit Attitude, a star of movies like ARE WE THERE YET, the brilliant fellows behind the (Vague Genre) Movies. Snyder has so far demonstrated integrity and a commitment to his...unique...style. That' gitta count for something.
All that said, good LORD! Babydoll is hot. Blondie, too.
