Solomon Kane Is the Undertaker of Evil
September 18th 2009 04:58
Do you know who Solomon Kane is? He's a comic character made popular in the 1930s. A 17th-century man who carries blades and guns and wears black. Now there's a Solomon Kane movie and he's out to exterminate evil from the face of the Earth.
From the same creator who gave us Conan the Barbarian and popularized in the pulp-fiction magazine Weird Tales, it's about a man of mystery who's bent on eliminating evil wherever they may be.
The creator of Solomon Kane, Robert E. Howard, was a creative man well ahead of his times in his character creations. His description of Kane would appeal very much to today's audience who are used to dark heroes wearing black. Howard is credited to have created the sword and sorcery genre which we all enjoy today in many incarnations, particularly fantasy creations relating to role playing games and such.
Howard made Solomon Kane's character dark - perhaps as dark as the evil he fights. Kane's mysterious past is emphasized by the wide hat he wears, almost always covering his face. His appearance in the movie reminds us of Hugh Jackman's Van Helsing, another period-character who's out to make war against evil. But unlike Van Helsing who's confined to doing battle with vampires, Solomon Kane battles a horde of evil things. In the movie, he goes up against a magma demon.
As another comic character come to life in the big screen, this should be of interest to old fans of the classic series just like the case of Conan the Barbarian which shot Arnold Schwarzenegger to fame. It may not really matter if Solomon Kane looks like "Van Helsing". Let's not forget that he was designed to look that way from the start by creator Howard and it's very likely Van Helsing's look was "insipired" by Kane's. Solomon Kane also stars Rachel Hurd-Wood from Peter Pan and Dorian Gray.
