Russell Crowe in Ridley Scott's Robin Hood - Are You Not Entertained... Again?
December 18th 2009 08:15
The Ridley Ridley Scott blockbuster, Gladiator, changed the way we look at those ancient Roman warriors who battled animals and each other for entertainment. The movie gave them a human face and that's the face of actor Russell Crowe who's line in the movie, "Are you not entertained?!" added to his fame like what "Show me the money!" did for Tom Cruise.
Now, Scott and Crowe are at it again in another period film extravaganza. This time, it's set pre medieval times in England and is about an archer in the army of Richard Coeur de Lion who goes up in arms against the Normans. This man is just a solder in an army, but history will learn to call him as Robin Hood, the thief who steals from the rich and gives to the poor.
We've seen a lot of Robin Hood films in the past before. There's the one where Kevin Costner starred in, and there's another one that came out at the same time as Costner's version but it's as if that one has vanished from the annals of robin hood movie history. Well, enough of that, because now there's a new Robin Hood and he's very much like the gladiator character of actor Crowe.
Sullen and driven to fight, this portrayal of Robin Hood is not the usual romanticized story with merry men. It's serious and intended to be historically accurate based on assumptions on who the real Robin Hood really was. Director Scott didn't spare any details on how the film shows those dark and troubled times.
With special film techniques to dramatize the battle sequences and music to set the mood, this updated Robin Hood has the thrills, spills, and suspense we all come to expect in a Ridley Scott movie. If you like his Gladiator, you may also find his Robin Hood just as entertaining. This one is written by a team of writers: Ethan Reiff, Cyrus Voris, Brian Helgeland, Paul Webb, and Tom Stoppard. If they've got a story to tell, it's got to be good.
Russel Crowe hits but misses with fist in Robin Hood. It's a choreographed fight scene, after all!
