Predators - The Plural Version
March 23rd 2010 01:14
The first Predator movie, released in 1987 is a classic. With a young Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead, it still is a good piece of entertainment even more than 20 years later. The special effects then was not really that good, but you have to admit it was and still is great! From the start of the movie, you already know that people in Dutch's (Schwarzenegger's) team are going to die. In the end, you know there can be only one survivor and it's not going to be the alien Predator. But it didn't really matter if you had an idea on how the movie was going to end. It's the action you want. You wanted to see how our hero outwits a more technologically-advanced being using "crude" human technology.
Yes, Predator is really an underdog movie disguised as an action flick. Instead of a poor high school guy being bullied in an academic or suburban setting, we have an alien jungle setting where a tough soldier guy is belittled by a superior alien with all the accouterments of a hunter who's out there for the challenge and to prove oneself. He's the bully, and he's going to get his punishment at the end courtesy of Dutch, seen here at left in a classic movie poster of Predator, but it's not going to be easy. That's the successful plot formula of Predator.
After a sequel and spin-offs that played out in different settings (with Aliens Vs Predator having the feel of a first-person video game), now comes Predators, produced by Robert Rodriguez and directed by Nimrod Antal, who's known for directing Kate Beckinsale and Luke Wilson in Vacancy (2007). The title of his predator movie is plural, and you can expect that there's more than one alien who's out hunting here. From the preview, it's obvious that the new movie attempts to emulate the feel of the first one, with a team of warriors fighting for their lives in a jungle setting. They were plucked out from all around the globe and placed in that "game-preserve planet" where they will be hunted by the predators like game animals. But unlike the first movie where the characters are simply sidetracked from a military mission, these new ones only have the problem of finding out what happened to them and rescuing themselves from a really difficult situation.
The unlikely hero in Predators is hawk-nosed Royce, played by lanky Adrien Brody. He's one of a few in the group who appears to have little to offer in dealing with the predators (although he has a big gun). It's another underdog plot again. Only this time, the mismatch is made obvious. Where Schwarzenegger was buff and tough, in Predators, Brody is lean and thin, and he's not just going up against one predator. There's a whole bunch of them hidden in the jungle. Again, we all know that others in Royce's group are going to die as trophies and that our nerdy hero is going to be the one to whip predator ass. But never mind the story, we all just want to see how it happens.
