Love Ranch Is a Compelling True Story
July 20th 2010 01:22
What would a couple with grand ambitions do in order to make lots of money? Open a laundry service? Sell shoes? They could, but for a couple in the nineteen seventies in Nevada, it’s opening the first legal brothel in the state. What’s it like for them to go into this business, you might ask. The movie Love Ranch answers that question.
Love Ranch is based on the story of a real couple. These are businesspeople who dreamed big and made it big and got rich in Las Vegas Nevada with their "Love Ranch" brothel. It’s kind of like the story of Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel, who dreamed of the first casino in Las Vegas. Of course, he ended up dead, but his dream went on with a life of its own, and today, it’s one of the historical sites in the City of Sin. Likewise, the story in Love Ranch is just as intriguing and noteworthy. It isn’t only appealing in a nostalgic kind of way, but it’s also got a good engaging story which you can’t say isn’t good, because it’s real. Dramatized, yes, but it’s real.
Love Ranch is a movie that will take you on a wild and bumpy ride with a couple who had a dream that they realized by "selling love." That dream may have been controversial and had a lot of detractors, but it’s still a dream that can be inspiring as you go through the excitement of realizing their brothel business. It’s a fantasy that many people out there may dream of themselves—titillating to no end. But just like the song about the Candy Rock Mountains, which seems innocent enough, there’s the crass truth behind the icing. For the most part, it’s ignored but everyone knows the real deal. The last part of the Big Rock Candy Mountain song, originally made by Harry McClintock, kind of relates to the story.
Love Ranch is directed by the guy who brought us An Officer and a Gentlemen and Ray, so the movie is really something to look forward to, owing to his excellent track record. With Helen Mirren in the lead role together with Joe Pesci, you can expect to be enthralled by great acting. You will see these renowned actors play their parts to the hilt. In one scene, Mirren (left) lectures a bunch of protesters and defends her employees, revealing them as people who just do a job to earn a living just like anybody else. It just so happened that they are good at what they do better than anything else.
Love Ranch deals with a sensitive issue, but it’s not really preachy, and that’s actually beside the point of it all, which is to simply show you what happened to a couple who dreamed big and got what they wanted, along with a few things they would rather have not dealt with and decisions they should have been better off not having taken. But it's all good. The movie is a dramatic journey back in time and into a slice of American history.

The punk rolled up his big blue eyes
And said to the jocker, "Sandy,
I've hiked and hiked and wandered too,
But I ain't seen any candy.
I've hiked and hiked till my feet are sore
And I'll be damned if I hike any more
To be buggered sore like a hobo's whore
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains."
