Hidden Image in J.J. Abrams’s Super 8 Sci-fi Teaser?
May 27th 2010 02:42
Remember how director J.J. Abrams teased viewers when his monster movie Cloverfield was promoted in trailers? People didn’t really know what the monster was or what the story was all about really. The teaser simply shows a lot of things being destroyed by something in New York and that's already a big come-on for science-fiction fans. Of course, after watching the trailer, people would have wanted to know what the monster looked like and where it came from. Beyond that, the teaser created anticipation for adrenalin-flowing entertainment once the movie was released. The plan worked and people flocked to see the movie. It wasn’t a big blockbuster—not everyone likes science-fiction—but teasing people into finding out what the movie was all about definitely brought in viewers.
In Super 8, Abrams sets out to repeat the same success with Cloverfield. Apart from clues that define the setting and theme, the teaser of Super 8 really gives us almost nothing except that it promises otherworldly thrills and heart-stopping dramatic action. We have come to expect all of these from Abrams because his works are already a staple on television, with Alias and Lost taking center stage. We also know him from his work on Mission Impossible 3 and the new Star Trek. His work primarily has mysteries that keep viewers either stuck on their seats or coming back for explanations on mysterious events.
In Cloverfield, the monster is invisible in the teaser. In Super 8, the monster, which supposedly escaped while being transported by train from Area 51 to a secure place in Ohio, is also not revealed in the trailer. After a pickup truck purposely smashes head on with the train (with enough force to buckle the cars and send them flying), one of the containers topples over. The occupant inside then punches its way out through the metal door, but it’s appearance is not revealed and the camera zooms out from the lens of a projector that seems to be running a Super 8 film strip.
What connects a Super 8 film with an alien monster is intriguing, and of course, if you haven’t watched the movie yet, you would want to know the connection. Since the alien escape supposedly happened in the 1970s, you can assume a lot of things, like film footage of alien autopsies and unidentified flying objects (UFOs). You can think of a lot of things, but little do people know is that Abrams inserted a few hidden images in the trailer. They are clues people will miss if they blink. So, just to satisfy the curiosity of readers here a bit, what follows is a little screen capture from the trailer where you can discern what appears to be an alien face.
If you haven’t seen Super 8 yet and dare to see one of the "bigger" hidden images, then you can VIEW IT ON Cinema Secrets.
By the way, there's also a hidden message in the trailer that comes after the secret "face." Super 8 is produced by Steven Spielberg and is written by, who else but J.J. Abrams!
