I Am Number 4 Movie Influenced by Dragonball

Nine escaped. Three have already been hunted down and killed on different parts of the world. Now it’s number four’s turn and he must do what he can to save his life and discover secrets about his past that are just now being uncovered. That’s basically what this new movie from Dreamworks and Walt Disney Pictures is all about. It’s title? I Am Number 4.
Our hero, John Smith or “Number 4” (played by Alex Pettyfer) pretends to be a high school student in the hopes of evading those who are out to end his life. As he discovers more about himself with the help of his girlfriend Sarah (Dianna Agron) and guardian, Smith (Timothy Oliphant), he discovers amazing powers that are often associated with Dragonball Z characters—he can generate luminous and explosive energy from his palms (like the kamehame wave); he can also manipulate matter and himself in order to defy gravity.
Movies with themes of high school students with otherworldly powers aren’t new. It’s not surprising because a lot of teens out there may have entertained at least once in their life, fantasies of being superhuman and having the ability to rescue the school from unheard of menaces which are actually representative of bullies and goons on campus. Indeed, special powers will come in handy if you need to face danger and save the day—your love interest included! You can imagine the possibilities. It's this notion that would make I Am Number 4 strangely appealing to young teens.
Basically, I Am Number 4 is a growing up movie. It simply gives the characters problems which are not realistic, but essentially, they still face pretty much the same dilemmas and situations that ordinary teens experience—relationship problems; finding a place in the world; discovering oneself, etc. This high school movie niche is something that’s taken off quite steeply with the success of the Harry Potter and Twilight series and it’s only natural that other movies will follow. Who know how many more of this type of movie will be made?

I Am Number 4 is a sci-fi thriller drama and leaves a lot for the audience to think about from the start. There will be questions. Who is Number 4? Where did he come from? Why is he being hunted down? What about Number 5, Number 6, Number 7, Number 8, and Number 9? Are their stories meant for other movies?
I Am Number 4 is directed by D.J. Caruso of Disturbia fame, and is based on a novel written by Jobie Hughes and James Frey under the pen name Pittacus Lore. If you want to know what this movie is about before going into the theater, then read the novel! The screenplay is written by Al Gough and Miles Millar, who are known to many comic book fans as the guys responsible for episodes of Smallville. So you see now why they were picked for this project? By the way, Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay have produced I Am Number 4. It should be interesting with this two big names in film involved.
