Great Points of Vantage Point

May 18th 2008 23:18
In Columbia Pictures’ action-packed thriller Vantage Point, eight strangers with eight
different points of view try to unlock the one truth behind an assassination attempt on the
president of the United States. Thomas Barnes (Dennis Quaid) and Kent Taylor
(Matthew Fox) are two Secret Service agents assigned to protect President Ashton
(William Hurt) at a landmark summit on the global war on terror. When President Ashton
is shot moments after his arrival in Spain, chaos ensues and disparate lives collide in the
hunt for the assassin. In the crowd is Howard Lewis (Forest Whitaker), an American
tourist who thinks he’s captured the shooter on his camcorder while videotaping the
event for his kids back home. Also there, relaying the historic event to millions of TV
viewers across the globe, is American TV news producer Rex Brooks (Sigourney
Weaver). As they and others reveal their stories, the pieces of the puzzle will fall into
place – and it will become apparent that shocking motivations lurk just beneath the
surface.

I must admit I haven't been to the movie theaters for quite a long time now and only recently have I re-discovered the wonderful world of theater seats, smell of popcorn, huge screens and surround sounds.

I watched Vantage Point weeks ago but haven't gotten into this post until now.

Point 1: 100% ACTION:
I don't know if it was my lack of movie "exposures" lately but I really enjoyed the action in this film. They were plain and simple, not much special effects aside from the huge explosion of course, but it had a bit of adrenaline rush all throughout.

The 8 different points or point of views showed were more than enough to fill the 2-hour or so film with action. Surprisingly, this is one of those few movies that don't have "side stories" given that they're basically all side stories with an aim to create the one big detailed story. Let me elaborate. Almost all action films will have a side story of a love interest. Always and forever, there will be. I don't know if James Bond and his girls started all this, but they just always do.

Point 2: GREAT WEAVE
As in, all 8 Vantage Points were woven quite carefully. Each had a purpose, not one was because of a side story. For a while I thought the story of the girl - Anna - was going to be a side-story, but she had a purpose towards the end. Pretty nifty!

Point 3: SIMPLE YET INTERESTING
The storyline was very simple. The president of the United States was shot, they want to find out who did it. Yes... because the world revolves around the US (sorry couldn't help it). It makes for a good movie so I'm fine with it. It was interesting. The overtones of terrorism Americans and their aggression were sort of perfect for the current situation.

To be honest, I was sleepy when I watched this movie, but not even halfway through it, I was seated straight up anticipating what's next. The action was there right from the start. No dragging introductions as would most films nowadays. It dove right into the story, then the introductions came.

Overall, i'd give it 4.5 dimes out of 5. Just cause I don't think anything is a perfect moviedime. Maybe when it's gotten me up to really shouting to everyone "YOU SHOULD WATCH THIS FILM" then they'd get 5 out of 5 dimes
