Go the Distance with Drew Barrymore and Justin Long
June 11th 2010 03:11
What does it take to go the distance in a long distance relationship? Garret (Justin Long) and Erin (Drew Barrymore) find out after they discover they have something going but have to part ways. So there’s the problem. How do you keep love alive when the relationship is long-distance? The separation between them may only be geographical, but the effort to bridge the gap can be a challenge to the couple, especially with people around them cramping their style or actually getting in the way of the relationship even when their intentions are well-meaning.
Basically, Garret and Erin didn’t expect to hurdle a long distance relationship. It just so happened that sparks flew between them in the time they were together and they couldn’t bear to part even when they eventually have to move physically apart. Erin has to leave in six weeks and Garret has to think of ways to make sure the relationship doesn’t go sour and make sure that it definitely goes the distance. The trouble is that the things he does do not seem to work at all. But that's bound to happen! garret's got to have a challenge or this movie won't be any fun!
Dedicated to Erin, Garret does everything possible to stay in touch with her even when his own dad—acting more like an annoying roommate rather than a father—gets in the way. Friends and family give every manner of advice but most of them serve only to cast doubts on the relationship. Unavoidably, Erin and Garret follow some of the advice and end up in funny situations. That’s pretty much where the bulk of the comedy of this movie comes from. The fun peaks near when the couple finally get to reunite and meet each other's family.
Going the Distance is directed by Nanette Burstein and written by Geoff LaTulippe. Burstein is known for her work on the documentary about high school kids in American Teen (2008). It’s a movie that won the Directing Award of the Chicago Film Critics Association Awards and it likely contributed to her excellent work in Going the Distance. Geoff LaTulippe, is able to capture the intensity, fun, and travails of a typical long distance relationship that anyone can relate to. If you want laughs and feel good at the same time, Going the Distance is one movie to watch.
