The Descent 2 Is Another Terrifying Trip into That Deep, Dark Cave
September 2nd 2009 09:13
The horror movie Descent is perhaps the most terrifying of all caving movies. It takes the primal fear of dark and suffocatingly tight spaces to a level that will induce related phobias even those who have never scared of the dark and closed spaces before. It's likely they will swear not to step into a real cave after watching the movie. But enough of the hype.
We all know that there are no creepy, flesh-eating, blind, humanoid monsters in deep caves, but it's hard to not imagine them lurking in places where you can't see anything except inky blackness. In the back of our minds, we still know that it's possible some kind of life could exist in the underground caverns of the Earth that is undiscovered and hungry for people.
In the first Descent movie, a group of spelunking girls get trapped in a deep and largely unexplored cave. Being trapped in a cave is perhaps the worst fear of any caver, and the fear is even worse if you know you have limited supplies like food and light. Of course, it's total panic when you have monsters out to eat you. In Descent, the girls accidentally maim one another and come close to insanity. Only one appears to have survived the subterranean creatures after having mentally snapped, her mind activating some mental coping mechanism that made her think she had escaped with her life.
In Descent 2, the sole survivor of the caving party (yes, someone was able to make it out of the cave) has to go back with the authorities so that her story may be verified and to convince everyone that she's not insane. Storywise, that's a good way of getting more fodder for the hungry cave creatures. So, the poor girl has to face all her fears again, unfortunately. But she's the hero and can only take the terrifying trip along with her in the sequel. How does she fare with those creatures the second time around?
