Christina Ricci Plays Dead in After.Life
March 11th 2010 04:51
Maybe it’s her looks, maybe it’s the way she acts; Christina Ricci has always been associated with things dead. She’s been in movies like The Addams Family, Casper, and Sleepy Hollow. More often than not, she’d be made up to look Goth, with pale skin, raven-hair, and eyes with dark circles. Her physical qualities are likely the reason why director Tim Burton picked her for a role with Johnny Depp in Sleepy Hollow. If you have seen the sketches of Burton, you will see the resemblance of Ricci with some of them.
Anyway, here is Ricci again in another movie with a story that moves around death. It stars Liam Neeson as an evil funeral director, Eliot Deacon, who uses his powers of suggestion to make Ricci’s character, Anna, believe that she’s dead after having been in a vehicular accident, even when all her sense tells her that she’s alive. Deacon tells her that he’s the only one who can hear her as a ghost, but of course, Anna challenges his insinuations and tries to break loose from his influence, only to discover that she’s trapped inside a cavernous funeral home that might as well be Deacon’s demented mind.
All the while, her boyfriend, Paul, played by Justin Long, tries to find the truth, convinced that she’s being kept a prisoner at the funeral parlor. But, determined as he is, rescuing a “dead’ girlfriend is not a simple matter as he also has to deal with Deacon. He confronts the funeral director, but of course, the only answer he gets is a lie. He tries to force his way into the parlor only to find a deadly world.
As expected in the movie, Deacon is able to “prepare” Anna for her funeral after a game of cat and mouse in the “parlor.” Deacon succeeds, even when she protests with all her mind and will. For the most part, her body simply does not obey and she unwillingly submits to all the things that Deacon does to her while in his care as the mortician. “You have to look beautiful for your funeral,” Deacon says.
After.Life is a movie not for everyone. It will make audiences’ hearts beat a little faster with terror. Some scenes can be troubling and for those who are sensitive to topic and visuals about dead bodies being violated, it's best to look the other way, or you might end up deeply disturbed. But remember that in this movie, Anna isn't really dead. As Anna is forced to face her own fears, so will the audience.
