My three pennies' worth -- in this case, my dime's worth on movies I've seen, would like to see maybe even those I wouldn't dare see. My take on movies -- doesn't necessarily have to be yours, but I'd be interested to hear yours. Enjoy the Movies!

Catch and Release (2006)

March 21st 2008 10:06

A woman faced with a tragedy discovers the man she loved was not all she imagined him to be in this romantic comedy-drama. Grey (Jennifer Garner) was a beautiful woman who found the man of her dreams in Grady Douglas, and was looking forward to spending the rest of her life with him until he suddenly died only a few days before they were to be married. With her wedding turned into an impromptu funeral, Grey is emotionally devastated but has to deal with the practicalities of her new life alone, including moving out of the house she shared with Grady. Short on cash and in need of emotional support, Grey moves in with two longtime friends, sloppy but philosophical Sam (Kevin Smith) and well-meaning but tightly wound Dennis (Sam Jaeger). Grey also finds herself often chatting with Fritz (Timothy Olyphant), Grady's best friend, through she's always regarded him as a sleazeball. As time passes, Grey discovers that Grady had a secret life he never shared with her -- including a young son from a previous relationship -- and as she tries to come to terms with the past of her former fiancé, she struggles to put her new life on track, and finds herself reevaluating her long-held feelings about Fritz. 'Catch and Release' was the first directorial effort from screenwriter Susannah Grant, whose script credits include 'Erin Brockovich,' '28 Days,' and 'In Her Shoes.' ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

First off, the title did not have anything to do with the movie. It was more of a side story. An insignificant side story. I got this movie while browsing online, the title actually caught my attention not knowing Jennifer Garner stars in it. I liked her in 13 going 30, she seems a bit fun in romantic comedies but this one didn't even seem like a romantic comedy. Even after reading the synopsis.

The start was a bit promising, literally, just the start. After about 15 minutes of the movie it became a bit predictable. There were funny parts sure. I especially liked Sam, Kevin Smith's character. He probably was the most profound characters in the movie. He was funny and at the same time had a lot of thoughtful insights. The other characters, especially Sam Jaeger was a bit odd, somewhat insignificant. They tried to use him as a twist to the twist but it didn't work.

I am a big fan of Romantic Comedies because they leave me feeling light and sometimes in love. I know it will be difficult to replace You've Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle in my list but I still enjoy watching other romantic comedies. This one didn't feel like one.

Got hubby and me laughing in some scenes and left us with a big question mark on others there were even some scenes that left us debating because it didn't have enough premise in the movie.

All in all if you want to just literally lie down watch a movie that you don't need to understand but have a good laugh with, this isn't it. You watch Napoleon Dynamite with that, or the American Pie movies.

It's right there between a sleeper and mild comedies. I think they wanted to make this a witty type of comedy but failed, miserably. There were too many going on with each of the characters that again isn't absolutely necessary.
