Bitch Slap Brings Back Old Barbarella Genre
September 14th 2009 05:28
It’s been a while since movies like Barbarella came along. The Planet Terror portion of the Grindhouse movie from director Robert Rodriguez comes close, and if it’s to be taken as the start of a trend, then we can say that the time of the bombshell B movie is back.
Take this one called Bitch Slap from director Rick Jacobson and writer Eric Gruendemann. Its unassuming positioning is obviously an attempt to revive an old genre that brings together shapely girls, odd costumes, and equally odd stories with a sci-fi twist. It’s like the good old days of cheap, shallow movies are back and it’s possible that the recession is to blame. Is it good or is it bad? For viewers who just want to be entertained, it doesn't really matter just as long as it's a movie that they can watch on a lazy Sunday afternoon. It’s still a matter of choice after all and there are lots of fans of this genre.
Bitch Slap is the kind of movie that doesn’t reveal what the story is about with just the title alone. By the title itself we can be sure that it’s not serious in the sense that it’s something that we can pretend to be real even for the duration of the show. Young guys—and maybe even the old ones—may want to watch this movie just for the sexy girls and the crazy things they do in the scenes. Girls may get to watch this only because their boyfriends insist. Who knows if they’ll like it or not? It's a movie for the guys!
By the looks of it, the story of Bitch Slap isn’t really important. It’s what’s to see (and what goes on) in the movie that’s the lure for the viewers. The characters are like paper cutouts set in an imagined world of weird conflict and mayhem in which good-looking girls take precedence. It doesn’t even matter if their foes are aliens or monsters, just as long as they kick-butt. In Bitch Slap, one of the girls may not even be human at all! The truth is for you to discover.
In my opinion, Bitch Slap is really for the few discerning enough to appreciate film productions that are inspired by the old cheap but juicy classics. Some people may say Bitch Slap is nonsense and not worth the watch, but it’s still a tribute to the past and it’s also what makes the movies interesting. Without crazy ideas, there would be no entertainment.

Film & TV on DVD
Where did you catch a screening of this?
I did a post on this one about 6 months ago in my coming soon section and have been waiting patiently for an official release.
I am a big fan of the Roger Corman/Russ Myer trash exploitation films of that era. This one looks like it was heavily influenced by Faster Pussycat, Kill, Kill
if your interested you can read my own post on Bitch Slap HERE
