A hostile army attacks Los Angeles and everything turns upside down. In the suddenness of the attack, soldiers come to the rescue, pitting their guns and ships against an enemy with superior firepower and technology. L.A., the City of Angels, is laid waste. What would our band of hardy Marines do in the wake of the battle in order to win the war?
War is never a pretty thing and if it’s the subject of a movie, it’s not going to make you jump for joy, because it’s likely a lot of people will be getting killed and a lot of things will be destroyed in the story. War films have always taken inspiration from actual events, historical or otherwise. There’s Pearl Harbor, for example, which depicted the Japanese invasion of Hawaii from the point of view of people caught up in the war. Such surprise attacks are always heartbreaking because people are caught unprepared and end up with lives changed in an instant.
Battle: Los Angeles is a war movie that focuses on a futuristic battle in Los Angeles between soldiers and aliens. Unlike traditional war movies, this one takes on the “what if” approach—in this case it’s: What if hostile aliens invaded Los Angeles more or less like what the Japanese Imperial Army did in World War 2? What would it be like? What if we made the invading army aliens from outer space?
The scenario of aliens invading the world isn’t new. It’s a favourite subject and draws from the deep fear of people when it comes to war and the unknown. People are simply afraid of the possibilities and are afraid for what can happen to their loved ones. In war, dramas unfold that are simply heart-wrenching.
Battle: Los Angeles, takes the drama of war into the domain of science fiction, where just about anything can happen with the use of fantastic technologies. In the movie, viewers get to follow soldiers as they battle against superior forces. In all appearances, they are the losers and you will see them getting whipped by the aliens. Battle: Los Angeles is no Independence Day that’s got a hint of comedy and wonder in it. This movie takes the serious approach and takes imagery from actual wars in Iraq and elsewhere and uses them effectively in the movie for a sense of realism. Battle: Los Angeles is the alien invasion movie that’s raw and unpainted and it takes you right in the middle of the battle.
Battle: Los Angeles is directed by Jonathan Liebesman and stars Michelle Rodriguez, who we’ve all seen before in another alien war movie, Avatar. This time, she’s in a climactic battle that takes place right at the home front. It's her US-government-issued weapons against those from outer space. What does her character do to win the battle? It's up to you to find out.
