My three pennies' worth -- in this case, my dime's worth on movies I've seen, would like to see maybe even those I wouldn't dare see. My take on movies -- doesn't necessarily have to be yours, but I'd be interested to hear yours. Enjoy the Movies!

August Rush

May 6th 2008 11:00

An unexpected good movie for me. Sure it's somehow cheezy but just like the summary I read somewhere online, it has a dash of fairy tale in it. The contrast of Classic and Rock music was wonderful. The story was woven quite carefully to avoid stepping onto each other. None of the stories overshadowed the other.

The characters at the start to me seemed a bit of a stretch. Tailored yet they seemed like ready to wear off the rack. Get what I mean? No? Ok... It's like they tried to make sure the characters are unique from any stereotypes which at the beginning didn't look like it because they seemed very typical. Towards the middle of the movie however, they started to bloom and become as unique as every diamond cut.

August Rush (Evan Taylor) on the other hand held the fairy tale to the story. He seems to hear music anywhere. A musical prodigy much like beethoven or mozart. He's orphaned and has grown up in boys' town. He's been bullied whenever he claims he hears music from the lights or the moon, but he stood by it.

He lived in search for his parents whom he aims to find via the music. Soon he escapes from the facility, gets to the city and goes from one person to the other still playing and hearing and understanding music wherever he goes. Until one day a pastor discovers him and enrolls him at Julliard where he learns and understands music much more than anybody. A prodigy. He creates a "rhapsody" which the director of Julliard wanted to play his composition in the annual concert at the central park.

There, where his mother was invited to play being an alumna of the school, he becomes successful in bringing his family back together -- through his music.

Sounds fantastic doesn't it? For me and hubby (even my son) who enjoys art films such as these, it's wonderful. Cheesy for most but I loved the music... especially the rock music of the dad played by Jonathan Rhys Myers.

And who'd have thought I'd see Robin Williams and Terrence Howard in this movie too??

It's definitely something I'd recommend people to watch. 5 dimes out of 5 for me!
