27 Dresses -- 27 zzzzzz's

March 27th 2008 11:36
Katherine Heigl tries to break into the romantic-comedy bracket in this film which uses a very common and overused adage .. always a bridesmaid, never a bride...

Just with that premise you know it's going to be very predictable. Again, I'm using the movies You've Got Mail and Sleepless In Seattle as my benchmarks. I know that most of the time it's hard not to be predictablein romantic comedies, however there are a lot of other redeeming factors that they can inject throughout the movie to make audience forget about its predictability.

A single woman who has served as a bridesmaid a shocking 27 times wrestles with the prospect of supporting her sister at the altar on number 28, despite having fallen helplessly in love with her smitten sibling's handsome husband-to-be. Jane (Katherine Heigl) has the kind of altruistic traits that everyone looks for in a friend, yet lately the perennial bridesmaid has begun to feel as if something is missing in her life. One night, local newspaper reporter Kevin (James Marsden) spots the devoted bridal attendant racing between receptions in Manhattan and Brooklyn, and quickly surmises that her quirky tale may be just the story to get him off the bridal beat and into the big time. Immediately suspicious of the cynical reporter's motivations, Jane butts heads with Kevin just as her younger sister Tess (Malin Akerman) shows up in town. While Jane has always put the needs of friends and family before her own wants and desires, she's suddenly prompted to reevaluate her priorities when her boss -- with whom she is secretly in love -- falls for her younger sister Tess. When Tess and Jane's boss George (Edward Burns) make plans to marry, the smitten younger sibling mistakenly assumes that her lovelorn older sibling will be happy to take part in the wedding. For as far back as Jane can remember, she has sacrificed her own happiness for the sake of those she holds dearest, but now that her heart has been broken, she's finally found the courage to be honest with herself. Now, as Jane finally comes to terms with her true feelings, her life begins to change in ways she never expected. Let me start with the costume. To be honest, the gowns are hideous. True, most bridesmaids gowns become hideous at some point, but is she saying she's been a bridesmaid since th 80's where most of the gowns seem to be from? It's 2008, even if it was only 2007 during the filming, I'm pretty sure she hasn't been a bridesmaid for as far back as the 80's, if she has then I pity her even more. The movie is about 27dresses, and her love for dresses so they could've at least exerted extra effor to make better dresses. If anything, she loved dresses but has bad taste for it!

The Cast. I loved James Marsden here, actually I'm beginning to like him a lot! He's showing his diversity -- action (xmen), drama (10th & Wolf), comedy (27 dresses) and musical! (Hairspray and Enchanted). He's probably the only reason I kept myself up throughout the whole movie. Heigl was fine, but that was it. She wasn't extraordinary, she wasn't charming really. Put Anne Hathaway here and it'd probably be more fun to watch. Watching this movie and observing Heigl, she seems like she's trying to figure out if she should do some Hathaway, or some (Meg) Ryan, maybe a Barrymore or a (Julia) Roberts. These ladies have made their marks because of their with, charm and acting abilities. I'm sorry but I don't see those in Heigl. She's pretty alright, but that's something all these other ladies have. In facth, it's also something they can also do away with -- remember Drew Barrymore in Never Been Kissed?

The Story. I already started on this at the beginning of this post. Knowing this is a romantic comedy, you always want to look for some aspects.

A very important one is that you'll have to feel for the lead character. The movie/story should put you in the main character/s shoes. In this case, Heigl. I couldn't put myself in her shoes because there wasn't enough premise to the story aside from the fact that she fell in love with dresses and weddings. I get that, I love dresses but again, after seeing those dresses... umm you'd want to ask why. I love weddings too, but the biggest part of the wedding is loving the fact that whoever is getting married is about to spend a wonderful life together (maybe not but still..).

Another big factor is that you'll have to be annoyed at someone, usually the person the lead character will eventually fall in love with. In this case, I think it was supposed to be Marsden but honestly, I was more annoyed at the sister!

Then there's the redeeming factor. A HUGE thing that the "love interest" does to make the lead fall in love for him/her anyway. What happened here was that she just had an epiphany shortly after the climax of the story and then that's it.

The story of how the sister and the boss fell in love is also very very fast forwarded, almost impossible. Felt like my kid was telling me a story he wanted to finish in 5 minutes that a whole lot of it was cut. Nothing made me feel sorry for Heigl beacuse of the sister and boss predicament beacuse she didn't do much except lie to the guy. The boss was just a big idiot... Then they were able to reconcile faster than they could say 27 dresses!

All in all I'd give this movie 2.5 dimes out of 5. It's something you'd want to watch for a break. No thinking coz it's too predictable already. It's not even a chick flick coz there's not much to "drool" about aside from Marsden. I remember Devil Wears Prada ... aahhh girls DROOOOOLLL over the costumes, shooooes, boots, dresses, skirts, bags, and the list goes on.

Do i have to say it again? The 27 dresses here were just hideous. what's there for chicks to drool about?
